Sticky Situation

Replacing the Classic Brica Sunshade

Brica's original Stretch-to-Fit Sunshade used suction cups to attach to the inside of car windows. Although a successful product, many consumers had complained about the suction cups detaching from the window mid-drive. Brica was looking for a new entry to this line: one that could achieve broader window coverage and a more secure attachment method.

My Role

Design Internship

I worked with the Munchkin Inc. design team during the first 4 months of my Internship in 2019. As the concept evolved I took on more and more responsibility with this project, seeing it from early development and user-testing through material selection and approval. The core function of this product was awarded a utility patent. I also developed illustrations and contributed copy for the instruction manual. Brica Magnetic Stretch-to-Fit can now be purchased on Amazon and Target

Benchmarking

We tested the fit of a prototype on the cars in the Munchkin Inc. parking lot. This helped us determine the sun shade dimensions that would manage the best coverage for the broadest range of car window shapes.

Magnetic Attachment

Near Universal Coverage

Five magnets arranged around the shade provide attachment to the metal outer frame of car doors. This ensures a stronger attachment that is held in place by the closed door as well as a simpler installation process than its suction-cup based predecessor.

Double Entrapment

Safety and Compliance

In the interest of providing a safe experience for parents and their infants, we designed the magnet housing to entrap the magnet twice. The product was rigorously tested make sure the magnet will not come loose from the shade.
