My Role on this Shoe
Contract Footwear Designer
I started contracting for Deckers X Lab in 2020. One of the early shoes I developed with them was the X-Scape Baja. I was tasked with creating and refining early concepts for a unisex water shoe that utilized a single component, molded EVA upper. The design needed to fit into their line of X-Scape sneakers by coordinating with their existing midsoles and pulling on graphic elements found across the entire lineup.
Natural Neutrals
Colorway Development
Alongside the Deckers X Lab team, I developed several colorways for the X-Scape Baja. The marbled look on the black and beige options takes its cue from a recent resurgence in camo-inspired patterns. The in-mold process adds an emotive and variable character to the shoe that reflects the watery conditions the X-Scape Baja was built to conquer.

Breathable and Drainable
The holes in the injection molded sugarcane EVA upper allow you to drain excess water from the X-Scape Baja with ease, and the simple construction and material selection helps the shoes dry in a flash.
